Led by Nora Byrne & Jessica Sim

This workshop is facilitated by Moovandji, a platform that offers young people the opportunity to lead projects from A to Z, in a simple, creative and fun way.

From packaging to notebooks to receipts, paper waste is a big part of our daily lives. Compared to other types of waste, paper is one of the easiest materials to recycle by hand and can transformed into beautiful pieces of textured paper for further note taking or art making.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make handmade paper from paper waste. Taking place over 2-4 sessions, participants will have the chance to experience the entire paper-making process (soaking, blending, and drying), as well as the option to build a paper mold and deckle and to develop an individual art project from their handmade paper (such as bookbinding, collage, or printmaking).

This workshop takes place outdoors, face-to-face, with a small group. Suitable for adults or young people.

Nora Byrne is a resident artist of NADAS Istanbul. She is a visual artist and designer focused on illustration, paper arts and collage. She focuses on cities in her artwork, wandering through streets and drawing on random corners, then collecting paper trash from the sidewalk to bring back to the studio. Her work combines a fascination with urban studies, a love of exploration and an issue with hoarding, creating three-dimensional cityscape collages that reflect on different authorities found within the city they depict. She found her way to Istanbul through Doha, Qatar, and is especially interested in exploring the relationships of megacities to their residents, and the potential for sustainable artmaking. She is currently working to develop a way to recycle waste paper for a larger series of Istanbul collages.

Jess Sim is one of the co-founders and co-directors of NADAS Istanbul. She is passionate about ecology and committed to developing creative ways to address climate change and inspire more mindful living. Jess holds an MA in International Performance Research from the University of Warwick and University of Amsterdam, and a BA in contemporary dance from the London Contemporary Dance School. She is also a Creative Climate Leader. She has worked as a curator and artist, including projects Museum of Garbage by FLYING roots and Şehir Ezmesi / City Paste. Jess has been living in Istanbul since January 2015.
